About Our Camp, Club & Mentors

Royal Family KIDS Camp Pasco Directors

Steve & Valerie Burnett

(This picture was taken during our 2004 Director’s Training.  We learned all the details of starting a Camp during the week at an actual Royal Family Kids’ Camp.)

We learned about Royal Family KIDS Camp through Valerie’s parents, Walt & Loretta Smith, who were Counselors & Grandparents at the Newport-Mesa Camp #1 in California. After “Grandpa Walt” died in 1999, Valerie began attending the camp with her mother. It didn’t take long for the Royal Family dream to become a reality in their hearts. 2005 was the first year that there was a Royal Family KIDS Camp in Eastern Washington. It was a huge but rewarding task to launch this first Camp. It would not have been possible without all of the volunteers and behind the scenes support that we received.

38 children and 65 volunteers attended our first camp. It was a life changing experience for all of us. We came back with new vision and hope for the forgotten children in our area.  We have reached maximum capacity at this campground of 64 Campers and 75-85 Volunteers.

Royal Family KIDS Pasco Mentor Directors

Rob & Beki Hammons

In 2012, Royal Family KIDS Pasco, expanded service to Campers by launching the Club-Mentor program.  Children who have attended a week of Camp are matched up with a Volunteer who has also attended a week of Camp.  The number of children mentored is subject to the number of Volunteers who sign up to become a Mentor.

Studies show that a year of regular mentoring by a trusted adult can help a child in every  area–socially, academically and emotionally.  Royal Family KIDS, Pasco is pleased to offer this opportunity to children who previously attended Camp.  The Volunteer Mentors receive additional screening and training that prepares them to effectively mentor.

Our program consists of 4 hours a month mentoring time plus an additional two hour, once a month Club event when the entire group gets together.  The children interact with familiar friends and participate in fun, Camp-style activities developed to improve self-esteem and confidence.  This program started in Pasco in 2012 and continues to serve children in our community.
